Welcome to Year 5
Year 5 is the third year of Key Stage 2 and children at Brindishe Schools will take on more responsibility and we will encourage greater independence in preparation for their transition into Year 6 and beyond.
At Brindishe Schools, we have developed a curriculum overview for each year group which details the focus for each subject in each half term. Please click on the Year 5 curriculum overview below to find out more:
English
Our children are encouraged to read widely in Year 5. The aim is that they will become familiar with many different types of language and different types of writing. They will take part in reading lessons where they talk about and explore their understanding of a wide range of books including stories, non-fiction, poetry, and play-scripts. You can find out more about supporting your child’s reading at Key Stage 2 by clicking on the link below.
In Year 5 the children will continue to develop their planning and drafting skills when writing both fiction and non-fiction. We will encourage them to evaluate their writing and make appropriate revisions and edits. Handwriting, spelling, grammar, and punctuation are all important aspects of writing that the children will explore and build on their skills from previous years. There are statutory spelling lists for children in Year 5 and Year 6 which you can see below:
Maths
In Year 5, our children continue to embed their understanding of mental and written calculation methods using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. They explore factors and multiples and learn how to multiply fractions. In Year 5, the children learn more about decimals and percentages. They will be able to count in powers of 10 and round numbers up to 1,000,000 to the nearest 10, 100, 1000, 10,000 and 100,000. The children will continue to focus on shape and space as they calculate perimeter and area as well as explore different types of graphs and timetables.
